Nest boxes:
With the reduction of suitable natural nest sites, a nest box can be really important for local wildlife. Make sure it is situated in an undisturbed area, and out of reach of predators.
As well as standard bird nestboxes which are designed for Blue or Great Tits, there are also boxes available for Robins, Wrens, Swifts, and House Sparrows. You can also get Hedgehog hibernation/breeding boxes.
If you find a young bird in your garden, the best advice is usually to leave it alone, as the parents are usually close by. If it is obviously injured, then consider taking it to a vet, or wildlife rescue.
Cats! During the breeding season, fledgling birds are at risk from predators such as cats. Try and keep your cats indoors between dusk and mid morning to reduce the risk of young birds being killed.
Looking after the countryside:
Keep to paths, and keep dogs under control. Especially in the Spring and Summer when ground nesting species such as Larks will be breeding.
Avoid dropping litter or leaving dog waste bags in the countryside: As well as being an eyesore, litter may take several years to decompose, and will attract unwanted vermin.
Avoid barbecues, or discarding cigarettes in areas prone to fire.
Avoid excessive noise, disturbance.
Don't pick wildflowers or attempt to handle wild animals.
